Pope John XXIII Seminary: Know our origins

information taken from Ad Altare 2002

1595 - Jesuit mission was founded in Cebu "Colegio de San Ildefonso"
1767 - Royal decree was issued banishing the Jesuits from Spain and her colonies.
1775 - its closure gave birth to another institution. turned over to the diocese.
1783 - formally established as a diocesan seminary. dominican friars ran the seminary.
1867 - administration changed hands to the Vincentian Fathers then SVD.
1867 - same year they accept seminarians and non seminarians giving education. Calle Los Martires now called MJ Cuenco.
1924 - Rome issued an order to separate Colegio from Seminario.
1930 - The Colegio was transferred to P. del Rosario (University of San Carlos Bldg.)

Where is the building now?

The old Seminario de San Carlos at Martires, MJ Cuenco was destroyed during World War II.
Seminarians were sent to Sibonga and Argao. Convents are the lodging place.

1950 - Cardinal Julio Rosales was the new archbishop in Cebu.
1950 - nine hectare campus was constructed. present location at Juan Luna Ave.
1952 - two independent seminary. Seminario Mayor de San Carlos and Seminario Menor de San Carlos. both were run by Spanish Vincentians.
1970 - graceful exit of the Spanish Vincentians after 17 years.
1970 - the new cebuano formators changed the name into Pope John XXIII Seminary.

Technically, Xsembros started since 1970.

Pope John XXIII was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Sotto il Monte, Italy, in the Diocese of Bergamo on 25 November 1881. He was the fourth in a family of 14. The family worked as sharecroppers.
